A Place for You

Volunteers are a valuable part of the care Pathways provides. Our flexible program welcomes people from all over the Bay Area and all walks of life. We’ve got a place for you that will meet your schedule and geographic preferences. There are a variety of ways that you can give your time, talents, and experience.

Some of the ways to help include:

• Support patient and families with companionship visits.
• Provide administrative support in one of our offices (Sunnyvale, Oakland or South San Francisco).
• Visit or call bereaved families.
• Become a Friendly Caller to those who need a calm, helpful telephone companion.
• Assist with fundraising or other events.
• Become a mentor—for natural leaders to assist staff in training new volunteers.
• Provide leadership, such as on our Foundation Board of Directors.

Training

Pathways gives volunteers specialized training to develop the skills they’ll need to work with patients and their families. Volunteers choosing administrative or other support functions receive an orientation and on-the-job training.

Time

Each volunteer is free to choose how much time he or she would like to give. Most volunteer from two to four hours a week. Volunteers usually work out a regular schedule of availability, but some prefer to be available to fill in as needed.

Benefits of Volunteering

Volunteers often find that their greatest satisfaction comes from contributing to the wellbeing of others. They also have the opportunity to apply their talents in fields different from their usual work. For some, volunteering may even lead to a new career. Their gifts of time, energy, and skills fill a unique role that only they can provide. Many volunteers tell us that they learn from working with other dedicated professionals and volunteers.

To explore volunteer opportunities at Pathways, call the Manager of Volunteer Services in your area, or visit the “Apply to be a Volunteer” section of our website. After completing an application, you’ll meet with a representative from Volunteer Services to help you find your place at Pathways.
