Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is hospice care?

Hospice care focuses on comfort when cure is no longer an option. There is always something more that can be done. We understand that people nearing the end of life have to cope with many changes - in medications, in mobility, in comfort, in appetite, in family roles and in priorities, to name just a few.

Our job is to help patients and their families cope with these medical, emotional and spiritual changes in order to keep them as productive and comfortable as possible - for however much time remains.

Who is appropriate for hospice?

Hospice is for anyone with a life expectancy of six months or less. This includes patients with any life-limiting illness, not just cancer. Pathways Hospice also accepts patients with feeding tubes, those who may still wish resuscitation, and terminally ill children.

Where is care delivered?

Pathways Hospice delivers care to patients wherever they live - a house, a skilled nursing facility, and apartment, or a retirement facility. Occasionally hospice may hospitalize a patient to get symptoms under optimal control, and if a caregiver at home needs a break, hospice will pay for a five-day respite stay in a skilled nursing facility for any Medicare or Medi-Cal patient.
